El Chiado and Barrio Alto

El Chiado and Barrio Alto

El Chiado is an elegant and bohemian neighborhood known as the "Montmartre" of Lisbon. Chiado was completely rebuilt after the fire of 1998 and in it Carmo streets, with the ruins of the church of the same name, and Garret.

Bairro Alto represents the alternative Lisbon and is probably the best place in town to listen to fados. Through its streets graffiti and clothes are abundant. To get to Barrio Alto you can take Rua Misericordia.

The Praça Luís de Camoes, one of the stages of the Carnation Revolution, marks the limits of the neighborhoods of Chiado and Bairro Alto.
Getting to Chiado and Barrio Alto

To get to these neighborhoods it is best to take tram 28, the Santa Justa elevator or the Da Gloria elevator that is in the same Restauradores Square.

Taking the Elevador de Santa Justa we can see the four blocks of houses that burned down on August 25, 1998.

Places of interest

Common place of encounter is A Brasileira coffee, in whose terrace, installed in one of its tables, a bronze sculpture represents Fernando Pessoa.

From the viewpoint of Sao Pedro de Alcántara we can enjoy splendid views of La Baixa, the Tagus and the Castle Hill of San Jorge.
