Vasco da Gama Bridge

Vasco da Gama Bridge

The Vasco da Gama Bridge is the longest bridge in Europe. It is 12.3 kilometers long and was built on the occasion of the 1998 Universal Exposition. The length of the bridge makes it impossible to see the other side on cloudy days.

Opened in 1998, it is named after Vasco da Gama, the most important Portuguese navigator. It commemorates the 500th anniversary of his arrival in India in 1498.

The construction of the Vasco da Gama Bridge was increasingly necessary as an alternative to the 25 de Abril Bridge, since until then this was the only way to cross from north to south of Portugal.

For the construction of the bridge, 3,300 workers were needed for 18 months.
