Next to the Tower of Belém and the Monastery of the Jeronimos is this monument of 52 meters of height erected in 1960 to commemorate the five hundred anniversary of one of the great discoverers of Portugal, the infant Henry the Navigator, discoverer of Madeira, The Azores And Cape Verde.

The Monument to the Discoveries contains a sculptural group with the shape of a caravel tip on which the Infant opens the way to numerous characters who had to do with the great discoveries of the history of Portugal.

Viewpoint of the Monument to the Discoveries

If you want to have a panoramic view of Belém from the heights you can climb to the top of this monument. The climb to the monument can be done by elevator.

From the top you can see the monument of Belém, the neighborhoods of the west of the city and, most importantly, a mosaic of marble at the foot of the monument that represents a rose of the winds in the center of which is a map of the world.

Rosa de los Vientos measures 50 meters in diameter and was designed by Cristino da Silva. It was a gift from the Republic of South Africa.
